Search Engine Optimisation
Search engine optimisation (often referred to as the abbreviation SEO) is the process of improving the quantity and/or quality of website traffic by improving its performance in the natural or "unpaid" search results on search engine results pages (SERPs). The actual work involved in the search engine optimisation process can vary depending on the condition of the website at the outset. In some cases, where a website is quite old or has been poorly coded, it is more efficient and productive to rebuild the website.
There are two very different methods of search engine optimisation, one of which is good and one of which is bad. The good method and the one we use at DX Net is often referred to as white hat SEO, which uses clean, trusted & reliable techniques which will survive the long term. The bad method is black hat SEO, which should be avoided as at best it will only provide a quick, short term solution. Black hat SEO uses techniques which search engines class as spam. Probably the most well known of these techniques is keyword stuffing. While this may work in the short term, search engines - particularly Google - are constantly evolving to spot these techniques and penalise a website for using them.
The white hat search engine optimisation process is a comprehensive process these days. It's no longer as straight forward as simply adding keywords to your Meta tags. To make a search engine friendly website, all of the following elements must be addressed:
- Code quality - If it's broken or contains unfriendly code, then the search engine robot visiting your site may get stuck in broken code and abandon its visit meaning it may never see what your website is about. To make the website easy to navigate for the search engine robots, the website should be coded to W3C compliance standards in XHTML & CSS.
- Website Structure - The website should be made to flow easily for the search engine robot, without compromising its usability to the human website visitor. A typically unfriendly structure starts with the use of a splash landing or welcome page.
- Anti-Robot elements - Certain web technologies are unfriendly to search engine robots, as they can't be read or accessed by the robots. The most common are Flash, frames & JavaScript.
- Target search phrases - Most web searches use phrases of 2-5 words in length, with approximately 60% of searches for services using geographic references, (e.g. " search engine optimisation north east ").
When you use DX Net to develop your new website, all of these white hat techniques are included in your development cost, and although results can vary this usually leads to your new website starting to show up on Google within just a week or two of launch.
